Abstract

Scientific Evidence on Treatment Strategies for Crowding in Children

by Di Carlo Gabriele

Crowded teeth develop when there is insufficient space for them to erupt. Dental crowding is a condition repeatedly linked to the psychosocial development of the child and to the building of his self-esteem. The prevalence of crowding varies and can affect both deciduous and permanent series elements. Crowding tends to increase with age, especially in the lower jaw, so that only one-third of adults have well-aligned lower anterior teeth. There are several causes of crowding: a dento-skeletal discrepancy up to the early loss of the deciduous due to caries or trauma. There are many different orthodontic procedures that can be used to prevent or correct crowding:lingual arch, lip bumper, extractions. The purpose of this presentation is to evaluate the current body of evidence available in the literature that can suggest to the orthodontist the best therapeutic strategy in terms of efficiency and efficacy in the treatment of dental crowding in children. A special point will be dedicated to the advantages produced by emerging technologies in the space management during pediatric and adolescentes period of treatment.
