Abstract

Treatment Goals in Mixed Dentition by Using Clear Aligners

by Revenaz Mercedes

The orthodontic treatment with the clear aligner system in mixed dentition , as phase 1 therapy, aims to contribute, in a preliminary stage by eliminating interferences and guiding growth, in successive and subsequent development of a permanent dentition according to the concepts of an ideal static occlusion model. Early diagnosis and effective treatment at the time of development of malocclusions can have both short- and long-term benefits while achieving goals of occlusal harmony, functionality and dentofacial aesthetics. Continuous technological innovations, effective therapeutic strategy and predetermination of specific biomechanics are factors that actually can enable us to achieve the therapeutic goals that we have planned for the pediatric patient in a controlled and simultaneous manner. Dentoalveolar discrepancy modulation, arch perimeter control, occlusal plane and relative unfavorable growth tendency control, correction of overbite and overjet, correction of sagittal relations, and improvement of smile aesthetics can be achievable goals in the growing patient. To check and measure the validity of the goals chosen as part of aligner therapy planning, we will have to make sure that these are specific, measurable, accessible, realistically achievable and timeable.

Learning Objectives

After this lecture, you will be able to recognize how orthodontic treatment with aligners system in mixed phase is an innovation in the world of early interceptive therapy that aims to obtain guidance in the development of the dentition
After this lecture, you will be able to demostrate that predetermined biomechanics obtained thanks to the technological innovation of the aligner system is a useful support in achieving the therapeutic goals in the growing patient
After this lecture, you will be able to define how future dentition development and unfavorable growth control are potential goals of orthodontic therapy with aligners.
