Abstract

Temporomandibular Disorders in Growing Subjects: New Diagnostic Criteria

by Michelotti Ambra

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) is a group of disorders in the masticatory system, mostly related to orofacial pain, but also including conditions related to jaw dysfunction. The prevalence of TMD pain in childhood is not well known due to the lack of standardized instruments for assessment. Several studies, however, have observed that TMD pain symptoms become more prevalent during puberty and adolescence. In this presentation comprehensive and a short forms of DC/TMD appropriate for use in children, aged 6-9 years, and adolescents, aged 10-18, in both clinical and research settings are shown. Clinical examination and pain related psychosocial status are presented. Clinical examination allows the diagnosis of TMD pain and TMD dysfunction, while pain related psychosocial status includes the screening for depression, anxiety, catastrophizing, stress, sleep disorders, pain disability, jaw movement disability and parafunctions. These standardized instruments for the Evaluation of TMD in children and adolescents are the results of a Delphi study conducted in collaboration with a number of worldwide experts in temporomandibular disorders and psychology in children and adolescents.
