Critical Periodontal Aspects in the Orthodontic Patient

by Rasperini Giulio

Young patients with needs for orthodontic treatment must have a detailed check of the periodontal tissues. The recent classification of periodontal diseases assign a stage and grade at different levels of the disease taking into account the severity, complexity, extension, and risk of progression of the disease. This Classification must be known by the orthodontist to be able to plan the case correctly. Attention should be placed during the diagnostic data collection on tissue phenotype. The periodontal soft tissues may present thin, medium thick and very thick, and this is site specific. The tissue phenotype plays a key role as predisposing factor to develop gingival recession and orthodontic treatment also or the retention phase may cause gingival recessions. A careful evaluation of both, hard and soft periodontal tissues before to start the orthodontic treatment allow to understand the possibility, limits and sequence of Ortho – Perio treatment even in severely compromised patient, preserving the natural dentition and maintain it for long term.
